Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea: The ‘Unlimited Data’ Offers

Soon after Reliance Jio entered the Indian market, incumbents such as Airtel, Vodafone and Idea launched their own unlimited calling offers. Now, it seems, is the turn of mobile data to take centre stage. The Mukesh Ambani-backed operator is providing data at never-seen-before prices with the new Jio Prime plan, and has forced the rivals to launch similar plans of their own. We take a look at the latest bundled data plans offered by Reliance Jio, Vodafone, Airtel and Idea Cellular to see which delivers the best value for money for the consumer.
Reliance Jio Prime subscription + Rs. 303 recharge pack
Reliance Jio is providing to Jio Prime customers 28GB of 4G data with the Rs. 303 prepaid recharge pack, which has 28-day validity; Jio Prime postpaid users get 30GB of high-speed data for the billing cycle at the same price. Under this plan, customers who subscribe to the Rs. 99 Jio Prime plan will be able to use 1GB of 4G data per day, and make unlimited free calls.
For those who find 1GB data insufficient, there’s the Rs. 499 Jio Prime recharge pack, which provides 56GB data to prepaid users, with daily cap of 2GB. Postpaid customers get 60GB of 4G data for the billing cycle, with the FUP set at 2GB per day.
Airtel Rs. 345 recharge pack
Airtel is providing the Rs. 345 recharge pack that provides prepaid users with 28GB of high-speed data for 28 days. While the daily FUP is set at 1GB, customers will be able to use only 500MB of data during the day, while the remaining 500MB allotted for the 12am to 6am period. Those who want to skip the restriction of timings can opt for the Rs. 549 recharge pack, which comes with 1GB daily FUP, but no limits based on timings.
The Rs. 345 and Rs. 549 recharge packs come with free calls, but with several caveats. Those who make calls beyond the 1,200 bundled minutes will be charged at 30p per minute (for local and STD calls). Moreover, Airtel has capped the free calls per day at 300 minutes, after which the charges will be 30p per minute. Additionally, calling more than 100 unique users in a week entails call tariff of 30p per minute for the rest of the validity.
For postpaid customers, Airtel will provide free data to customers starting March 13, as per an official communication. However, the company has not announced how much free data the users will get, or other conditions attached. The Airtel subscribers will need to open the MyAirtel app to see how much data they get free as part of the offer.
Vodafone Rs. 346 recharge pack
Vodafone has reportedly launched the Rs. 346 recharge pack that comes with 28GB of mobile data and unlimited free calls. Like rivals, Vodafone is also putting a cap of 1GB on free data consumption, after which the consumer will be charged. In an official statement, Vodafone said, “Vodafone customers are diverse as are their wants. To satisfy these diverse needs and wants, Vodafone offers various segmented propositions. This is one such segmented offering and the offer is valid only till 15 March.”
Idea Rs. 348 recharge pack
Idea is providing users with 500MB of high-speed data with the Rs. 348 recharge pack, along with unlimited free calls; this totals to 14GB of data per month. Users are required to have a 4G handset (but not a 4G-enabled SIM) to avail this new offer from Idea. Not available as an open market recharge pack, the pack is aimed at low-data consumers and is offered to users by Idea executives. You can also check if you are eligible for the offer using the My Idea app.

12 features you probably didn’t know exist on WhatsApp

WhatsApp’s core messaging function is pretty easy to use.
But there’s a lot more to the Facebook-owned messaging service — which surpassed 1 billion users in February 2016 — than most of its users possibly know.
We take you through some of its most useful but less well-known features, including how to get WhatsApp on your computer, how to switch phone numbers on your account, and its newest Snapchat-like feature “status.”
1. Stop photos and videos you receive in chats (WhatsApp media) from automatically downloading onto your phone and taking up precious space.
On an iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy >Photos > Tap to toggle off the WhatsApp button
2. Use WhatsApp on your computer just like you do on your phone with the web app “WhatsApp for Desktop.”
Click on this link to download WhatsApp for your computer and follow the install instructions.
In your phone’s WhatsApp app, go to Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop and scan the barcode on the desktop app.
3. Mute group conversations if they are very active and interruptive.
4. Reply directly to a message buried in a thread.
Your reply will send with the message you are responding to embedded above it — similar to a how “quote retweet” works on Twitter.
5. Share and send photos, videos, or GIFs broadly or with specific contacts on WhatsApp on its recently launched status update feature.
You might have to update your app to see this one, it only launched this week.
You can choose to send your “status” to all your WhatsApp contacts, contacts “except,” or select a specific list of contacts. Whoever you send it to, it will disappear after 24 hours. When you tap to add “My Status” for the first time, after you create your status (photo/video) it will give you the option to choose who you want to send it to via a pop up. Choose “Privacy Settings” in the pop up and from there select who you want to share it with.
6. Turn off your read receipts.
Go to Settings > Account > Privacy > switch off Read Receipts. If you switch off “last seen,” people will still be able to see when you’ve read their message (via the double blue tick), but they won’t be able to see when you were last online.
7. Switch numbers easily.
The WhatsApp service is linked to the first number you enter and verify. This “number” will then follow you onto your next phone, even if you have a new number. If you get a new number, you can change your WhatsApp number quite easily by going to Settings > Account > Change Number and following the steps from there.
8. Back up your WhatsApp chats and media.
If you’re switching phones and you don’t want to lose your chat history, make sure you back up your chats. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup Of course, you can set it to auto backup on a daily, weekly, or monthly.
9. Use Italics, bold, and strikethrough.
As per the screenshot, it’s a “*” either side for bold, “_” either side for italic, and a “~” for strikethrough (though we’re struggling to figure out what that’s useful for).
10. Make video calls.
11. Blast out a message to multiple contacts at once.
12. Stop all WhatsApp notifications from interrupting you by popping up on your screen.

WhatsApp accepts its new status feature is not a ‘hit’

NEW DELHI: Facebook-owned WhatsApp recently rolled out a big update to its ‘Status’ feature. The enhanced feature is quite similar to Snapchat’s stories. But it seems that the new Status has turned out to be a flop.
Numerous discontented users have posted their disappointed and criticized the company for copying Instagram and Snapchat’s features. Along with this, users also seem to be missing the old text-based status updates.
Keeping in mind the feedback received from users, it seems that WhatsApp is now working on bringing back the old status feature. This means that those users will be able to choose between old text-based status updates and the newer audio/video-based status updates.
According to WaBetaInfo (@wabetainfo), a Twitter account that tracks changes in WhatsApp’s beta builds, the ‘Info’ section in the app’s beta version will feature an extended menu. Tapping on it will lead the users to the old status menu, which is now renamed as ‘Info’.
It’s been further mentioned that the new changes appear under the ‘Profile’ section. Earlier, the status was called Tagline but now, it has been renamed as ‘Info’.

Apart from the old status coming back, WaBetaInfo also revealed that WhatsApp has renamed the ‘revoke’ feature as ‘unsend’. The option, which allows users to recall sent messages, is available under the three dot menu located on the top right corner of the app. Once users click on the ‘Unsend’ option, the app asks for a confirmation. When confirmed, the sent status changes to ‘This message was unsent’.
The new features are likely to be rolled out to all WhatsApp users soon.
